The Champions Hockey League is the most popular ice hockey event in Europe. The CHL is the competition where the best clubs of Europe come to compete to become the best ice hockey team on the continent.
Organized by International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), a total of 26 hockey teams from 6 different European countries participated in the inaugural season. In 2008, a tournament of the same name was organized to coincide with the IIHF's 100th anniversary. By 2014, European Trophy was improved and turned into the current format.
In the 2022-23 Champions Hockey League, a total of 32 teams from first-tier leagues of different European countries will compete.
So far in its short history, the champions hockey league has been dominated by clubs from Sweden. Particulary, Frölunda HC won the European Trophy on four different occasions. Swedish club Luleå HF won the first ever season of the CHL (2014-15) by defeating Frölunda HC.
